Uttrakhand gets its 1st Earthquake onsite Early Warning System (EWS) at Dehradun at NDRF unit near
Bala ji Dham. Good news for the Disaster Management authorities as two different type of
EWS operational in the state now. The EWS can help in cross test for a particular intensity
of 5 or 6 in the region of installation. The signal of early warning can be detected from this
EWS to the control room and for further dissimination if required. Understanding the functions
of such EWS and creating SOP’s for the authorities are most important. Additional advanced public
sirens and further integration can help in disseminating informative early warning of earthquakes
and other disaster from the same sirens is possible. Such onsite EWS are essential for our critical
installations for the safety of our economy and lives.
This EWS has been developed by German Research Centre for Geo Sciences
(GFZ, Potsdam & secty electronics, Germany) together and installed by Terra Techcom Private Limited,
New Delhi. This EWS has triggered 30 seconds prior alarm before the arrival of damaging S waves in
Indonesian & Chile earthquakes and no false alarm in India and other 25 countries so far.
Congrats to National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for this great initiative towards Earthquake safety
keeping in view of indications of severe earthquakes in Northern part of India in near future especially
in Uttrakhand .
