FAQ’s

Q- What is fault?

Ans- In the Earth’s crust, when a fracture or zone of fractures occur between two block of rock, that is called a fault. It can be of any length, from a few millimeters to thousands of kilometers.

Q- Who founded the relationship between faults and earthquakes?

Ans- In nineteenth century, geologists founded this relationship after studing 1855 Wellington Earthquake in New Zealand.

Q- Does these faults causes earthquakes?

Ans- Yes, a sudden slip in fault causes an earthquake. As rocks slips, an energy is generated and released in the form of waves.

Q- What its feel like when an earthquake occurs?

Ans- The primary waves of the earthquake gives you a feeling of small jerk motion, followed by an intense jerking motion. The duration for which the rolling and jerking lasts depends upon the magnitude and intensity of waves.

Q- How many fault zones are identified by the seismologists?

Ans- More than 100 active fault zones are identified worldwide.

Q- List the fault zones in India and region that lie on these zones.

Ans- The zones are classified into:

  • Zone 5- Very High Damage Risk Zone- Regions that fall on this zone are the region of Kashmir, North and Middle Bihar, the western and central Himalayas, the North-East Indian region and the Rann of Kutch.
  • Zone 4- High Damage Risk Zone- Indo-Gangetic basin, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Koyananager (Maharashtra) and Raksaul (Bihar)
  • Zone 3- Moderate Damage Risk Zone- Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Western Himalayas and parts of Kashmir.
  • Zone 2- Low Damage Risk Zone- No region of India is classed as Zone 2.
  • Zone 1- No Indian region is classed as Zone 1.

Q- How many fault lines are present in New Delhi?

Ans- The capital city, Delhi is sitting on three fault lines- Sohna fault line, Mathura fault line and Delhi-Moradabad fault line.

Q- Is Indian government is prepared to face any large earthquake in India?

Ans- Witnessing the severe damages earthquakes are causing to people, Indian government is working towards finding ways to prevent such huge loss of life. In this initiative, recently, ISRO and NASA have joined hands to launch a satellite called NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) in order to help scientists study earthquake and its patterns.

Q- Is there any initiative taken by private companies?

Ans- Even private companies are contributing to save the massive destruction from earthquake, especially the lives. A young business enterprise- Terra Techcom Pvt. Ltd. also forayed into the field of earthquake science and introduced Earthquake Onsite Early Warning and Security System in India. Headquartered in South Patel Nagar, New Delhi, the company brings a complete solution for earthquake early warning and safety.

Q- List the Richer Scale Calculation to the Strength of Magnitude?

Ans-

  • An earthquake of 2.0 is described as micro earthquake. It comes and goes unnoticed.
  • Few people feel an earthquake of 2.0-3.9 magnitude.
  • All people notice an earthquake of 4.0-5.2 magnitude and causes minor damage.
  • An earthquake of 5.3- 6.0 magnitude can cause slight damage to building & structures.
  • A lot of damage in populated area can be caused by 6.1- 6.9 magnitude earthquake.
  • Serious damage can be caused by 7.0- 7.9 magnitude earthquake.
  • A 8.0 or above magnitude earthquake can destroy communities near epicenter.

Q- What are the classes of Earthquake?

Ans- An earthquake is classified into classes based on its magnitude:

  • Great- 8 and more magnitude
  • Major- 7-7.9 magnitude
  • Strong- 6-6.9 magnitude
  • Moderate- 5-5.9 magnitude
  • Light- 4-4.9 magnitude
  • Minor- 3-3.9 magnitude
  • Micro- Below 3 magnitude

Q- List the European Macroseismic Scale EMS-98 of Intensity ?

Ans-

  • I- not felt
  • II- scarcely felt
  • III- weak
  • IV- largely observed
  • V- strong
  • VI- slightly damaging
  • VII- damaging
  • VIII- heavily damaging
  • IX- destructive
  • X- very destructive
  • XI- devastating
  • XII- completely devastating

Q- What is the idea behind launching Earthquake Onsite Early Warning and Security System?

Ans- The idea behind the development and launch of such equipment is to early detect an earthquake and help reduce casualties, injuries and damages.

Q- How lives can be saved with this device?

Ans- Using the earthquake detector, first waves- primary waves can be detected, warning can be triggered and spread through via a siren indicating people that an earthquake is on the way.

Q- Are these earthquake detectors installed anywhere in India or other country?

Ans- New Secretarait, Government of Haryana Chandigarh is equipped with the system. Haryana institute of Public Administration, Gurgaon is going to be the second installation and first official installation in India. Installation at HIPA is historical being first official installation among more than 100 countries those still looking for such type of technology.

These earthquake detectors are completely tested and installed in 26 countries by Secty Electronics.

Q- How does this device indicate the intensity of earthquake?

Ans- The device has eight channels for generation of warning signal. According to the intensity of the earthquake, the output voltage of channels are triggered in increasing order- from 01 to 08.

Q- Can this device can be integrated with Gas line and where it can shut off the line during earthquake?

Ans- Yes, it can be integrated with Gas line. For successful implementation and guarantee performance, several tests performed are by TUV, including static pressure test, moment test, bending test, impact test, external leakage test, internal leakage test, capacity test, and shut-off test at full capacity.
